How could one connection change your life?

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’. Well, after 9 years of making meaningful connections, we’re convinced it’s a combination of who you know, what you know and your willingness to share it.

Have you ever introduced two friends and found that their connection was instantly and undeniably magical? Here at HubDot we call that Alchemy and we believe that everyone has the connecting superpower to open up their address book and make that magic happen. Think of all the untapped potential we all have and the power our friends, colleagues, family members and communities have to unlock it through one simple introduction.

“...who you know…”

Did you know that 85% of jobs are filled through networking? This makes networking almost essential to give you the best chances. Sure, you might get lucky and find that people you already know have opportunities in mind for you, but think of all the amazing opportunities that are passing you by because you’ve not yet met that life-changing connection. We’ve helped thousands of people find work and volunteering opportunities through making those extraordinary introductions, and that’s a big part of why we do what we do. Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or you simply know it’s not what you’re currently working on, we can help you find that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity through the power of connections.

“...what you know…”

On a personal level, we each connect with people all the time. We help each other out, give advice, provide a listening ear, share our interests, stories and experiences and make new memories together. It’s human nature and usually leads to friendship. Yet, when it comes to the more transactional, useful or professional connections - the people who could really open doors for us through their advice and wisdom, there seems to be this unspoken rule that we should either be paying for their time, masking our intentions when we speak to them, or competing to become them. Yet, if there’s one thing we’ve found it’s that many successful people love nothing more than sharing their knowledge. We’ve met people from the highest tiers of business success and they were just as generous, kind and willing to help as the next person - and many of them have more time and resources to do so. So next time you need advice, why not come to a HubDot event and ask for it?

“...willingness to share it…”

According to global market intelligence firm, IDC, Fortune 500 companies lose at least $31.5 billion a year by failing to share knowledge. So, success really can be gained from sharing your wisdom, and sometimes being secretive and competitive around your knowledge can even hinder your success or slow you down. Realistically, no mentor-mentee relationship is ever a one-way street. There’s so much to be learned from teaching, coaching and mentoring, and often those lessons tell us more about ourselves and the way we process and retain information – self-awareness that is essential to our success.

We talk a lot about networking without competition, elitism and ego-driven ideals, because we feel it creates the kindest culture, the best atmosphere and the most valuable exchange. If we can agree on one thing, that we’re all equal, and accept that we’re just on different paths and at different stages of our journey, we all have everything to gain and very little to lose.
